Atlas by Battles

The first time I heard this song, I physically couldn’t sit still. It shows that when executed well, rhythms can build tension equally as well as melody or lyrical content. It doesn’t matter what he says, it’s when he says it that’s important.

The drum sets the standard, with each subsequent addition coming at it’s own pace to make you notice. Without listening carefully, the track can seem messy and cluttered, but dig deeper and you’ll find subtlety and space. In other hands this guitar line would become overpowering, but here it is simply another rhythm.

The breakdown at 2:43 reintroduces everything in case you missed it the first time, and it’s here that we get carried away. Hypmnotised by the rhythm, the guitar line takes us on a journey. Each twist raises the anxiety levels, and when it climaxes with the return of that haunting vocal, we are euphoric.

And then, just for a second at 6:30, the drum stops. It’s the first time in 6:30 minutes that we are without it, and it is the defining moment of the song.
